Cononley Parish Council owns land off Meadow Croft and School Lane which is used for allotments. It is expected that tenants abide by the terms of their tenancy agreement by keeping their plots well maintained and used. The Allotment Committee which currently comprises of all the Parish Councillors inspects the plots several times per year.
The day-to-day running of the sites is overseen by the Clerk, with the Lengthsman undertaking the maintenance work, such as grass cutting and litter picking.
The Parish Council's Biodiversity Policy, adopted in January 2024 in response to its legal biodiversity duty, sets out a commitment to protecting and enhancing nature. As part of this policy, allotment holders are encouraged to adopt gardening for nature principles, including the use of peat-free compost, home composting, avoiding harmful pesticides, and harvesting rainwater.
Only dogs belonging to allotment holders are allowed on the allotments.
The Parish Council have recently installed new pathways throughout the allotment site to improve access in all weather conditions. These upgrades make it easier for plot holders to move around safely and maintain their plots more effectively.
Several water butts are now available across the site to support sustainable watering practices.
Water butts owned by the Parish Council are available for tenants to use on their plots if they do not already have one.
Did you know there is a community orchard on the allotment site? Anyone in the village is welcome to visit, enjoy the space, and contribute to its care. It’s a shared resource for everyone to appreciate.
If you are interested in obtaining an allotment plot, you can join the waiting list by emailing the Clerk and including proof of address. In order to be granted a plot you must agree to the terms outlined in the Tenancy Agreement for Allotment Holders. For any other enquiries about our allotments please email the Clerk.
The Parish Council would be happy to support the formation of an Allotment Committee if there is interest among plot holders. Such a committee would help represent the interests of allotment users and improve communication with the Parish Council. If you are interested in helping establish a committee, please contact the Clerk. The Allotments also have a Facebook Group: Cononley Allotments and Growers Society
The Parish Council judges the allotments every two years as part of the Cononley Make It Bake It Grow It Show. You can view previous entries and photos on the event’s Facebook page. The next show will take place in September 2026.
